Serving in the military way - living like a civilian

Many businessmen of the German imperial era used their houses for a number of different purposes. In addition to shops, inns and cafés at street level, they built rooms and flats in the floors above and offered them to officers in training. The latter preferred to live privately. The availability of stables in the grounds of the houses enabled them to stable their horses there too. A good example of such a building is the former Hotel Malitzky at 21 Parkstraße (2) which was actually built as an officer's dwelling and provided spacious accommodation. Casinos and the parks with tennis courts were popular meeting places for the officers.
