Soviet garrison

The remains of the entrance area to the Soviet garrison (5) remind us of the time spent here by the armed forces of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) from 1945 to 1992. Some 40,000 to 70,000 Soviet military personnel were stationed with their families in and around Jüterbog. The Heidehof firing range was created to the east of Jüterbog in 1950 to provide additional facilities to the Jüterbog firing range. Large parts of this neighbourhood belonged to the "forbidden city". Despite official friendship meetings between citizens of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and Soviet soldiers, personal contact between them was not encouraged.
