The municipal museums

Just a few steps further on we reach Carl-Philipp-Emanuel-Bach-Straße and the Städtische Museen (municipal museums) (7). This carefully restored building with its elaborate 17th century stucco ceilings was not only the former residence of the professor of history but also that of any members of the royal court who came to study at the Viadrina.

University professors lived not only in Carl-Philipp-Emanuel-Bach-Straße and Große Oderstraße, they also occupied other buildings close to the city hall. The house of Professor Wimpina (8), the founding dean of the university, stood on the eastern side of the city hall. The house of the famous New-Latin poet Professor Sabinus (9), the son-in-law of Philipp Melanchthon, the 500th anniversary of whose birth is being celebrated in 2008, was located on the northern side of the city hall. The professors used to teach their students in their elongated courtyards.
