The concert hall

Almost 200 metres east across Collegienstraße, whose name derives from the university, stands the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Konzerthalle (concert hall) (2). The building (completed in 1525) with its with its beautiful star-shaped reticulated vaulting was once the church of the Franciscan monastery which was located here from at least 1270. Two of the 17 monks taught at the Viadrina. Following the dissolution of the monastery during the Reformation, the city was assigned the monastery church and all of the other buildings were transferred to the university. In 1572, the Communität, a municipal facility where 100 and ultimately 60 people received lunch and supper at five big tables, was located where the extension to the concert hall now stands. The university's (second) detention room was located just a few steps away, separated from the garden of the Communität in the 18th century.
