At the end of Lindenstraße

The Carthusian Monastery (15) stood at the end of Lindenstraße where Frankfurt's stadium is now located. The monastery and its considerable property holdings in Frankfurt and the wider region were transferred to the university in 1540. The university baker worked in the grounds of the monastery. The Viadrina also owned and leased out brickworks, a distillery and a brewery there. The wheat beer, which was brewed there from 1685, was particularly popular. It was characterised by a wine-like taste and was later even enjoyed at the royal table.

While many students drank this beer in the brewery's tavern others spent their time at a nearby fountain whose water did not freeze, even in winter. Ulrich von Hutten and other students of Frankfurt sang and versified about this fountain which is why it came to be known as Pontem Poetarum, i.e. poet's fountain, Poetenbrunnen (16). Our tour ends here on Buschmühlenweg 7, although many other traces of Brandenburg's first state university still await your discovery.
