On the way to the market

On the way to the market square with the remarkable bell tower we see steles dedicated to famous teachers (3). For example, Erwin Münchow, the principal of Luckenwalde's first secular school (today's Friedrich-Ebert-Schule), is remembered here. As an active Social Democrat, he advocated a youth initiation ceremony instead of confirmation. The students at the school were taught life skills instead of religion. Erwin Münchow was removed from school service in 1933. He was imprisoned in several concentration camps until 1935. After 1945 he became a principal in the state school service again, he was a city councillor in Dortmund and, from 1950 to 1954, a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament.
